NEW! Journal of Graduate Medical Education Articles of the Week
Audit-and-Feedback Utilizing Resident Consensus Standards Reduced Daily Labs
Ryan Duffy, MD; Suchita Shah Sata, MD; Alexandra R. Linares, BS; Brian Schneider, MD; David L. Simel, MD, MS; Joel C. Boggan, MD, MPH
Residents often order unnecessary laboratory tests because of inexperience, discomfort with diagnostic uncertainty, and fear of criticism from an attending physician. This study compared internal medicine residents’ thresholds for rechecking commonly trended inpatient labs to assess differences related to clinical experience. It showed that lab-ordering behavior improved when residents received regular feedback on adherence to their own definition of stable labs.
Virtual Interviews: Concerns for Rural Residency Programs

While remote residency interviews can be beneficial, they also have downsides, particularly for applicants to rural programs as they try to obtain an authentic impression of rural life and education via video. This Perspectives article explores concerns about how remote interviews impact the mission of a small residency program in the Navajo Nation to provide primary care.
