The ACGME proudly announces the retirement of Chief Education Officer and Special Advisor to the President and Chief Executive Officer Timothy P. Brigham, MDiv, MS, PhD. Dr. Brigham has been a guiding force in shaping graduate medical education (GME), advancing faculty development, and championing physician well-being for almost two decades.
Dr. Brigham started the ACGME’s Department of Education, and under his leadership, Digital Learning and Continuing Medical Education were added to the organization, greatly expanding educational opportunities and rewarding learning wherever it happens. As Chief Education Officer, Dr. Brigham transformed the Annual Educational Conference into the premier forum for innovation and collaboration in GME. He spearheaded faculty development initiatives and competency-based education models that have strengthened residency and fellowship education nationwide. His academic expertise and commitment to learning helped shape and inform programs that continue to elevate the quality of medical education.
Dr. Brigham’s influence extends beyond education. He co-chaired the landmark ACGME Symposium on Physician Well-Being, catalyzing a national movement to address burnout and resilience. He was a driving force behind the creation of a suite of resources designed to support cognitive skill-building and well-being for residents, fellows, and faculty members in GME. His advocacy helped embed well-being into accreditation standards and institutional culture, ensuring that US physicians learn and train in environments that promote and support both clinical excellence and personal health. Dr. Brigham has been involved in physician faculty development, resident education, and chief resident and program director development, including spearheading the ACGME’s immensely popular and successful Leadership Skills Training Program for Chief Residents, designed to provide a transitional experience into the leadership role of chief resident by enhancing self-awareness and developing appreciation for interpersonal behavior.
A frequent speaker, teacher, facilitator, consultant, and author, Dr. Brigham has shared insights on professionalism; resilience; resident/fellow stress and well-being; leadership, teaching, and organizational development; and systemic approaches to well-being at national conferences and in scholarly publications. His collaborations with leaders like US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy and National Academy of Medicine President Dr. Victor Dzau advanced the National Plan for Health Workforce Well-Being, reinforcing his role as a thought leader in health care transformation.
Dr. Brigham’s retirement was celebrated at a recent organization-wide event, where colleagues reflected on his lasting impact, and expressed gratitude for his mentorship and leadership. As he embarks on his next chapter, the ACGME community honors his extraordinary legacy.
