Nikhil Goyal, MBBS, FACP, FAAEM joined the ACGME in August 2024. Prior to joining the ACGME, Dr. Goyal was associate designated institutional official (DIO) for Detroit and Wyandotte at Henry Ford Health in Detroit, Michigan, where he continues to practice emergency medicine. He was previously the DIO of Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital and the program director of the transitional year residency, combined emergency medicine-internal medicine residency, and combined emergency medicine-internal medicine-critical care residency/fellowship programs at Henry Ford Hospital.

Dr. Goyal completed medical school at Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, India, followed by a residency at Henry Ford Hospital in the combined emergency medicine-internal medicine program. He is board certified in emergency medicine, internal medicine, and clinical informatics, and his academic appointments include clinical professor of medical specialties at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and clinical professor of internal medicine and emergency medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Dr. Goyal has been a significant contributor to the ACGME’s Mission through his service as member and Chair of the Transitional Year Review Committee and as Vice Chair of the Council of Review Committee Chairs. He also served on the ACGME Board of Directors’ Committee on Requirements and Task Force on Diversity, and Co-Chaired the Board’s Task Force on Burden Reduction. His background in informatics and programming has led to several innovations that have benefited the graduate medical education community. In addition, he has provided valuable and dedicated service to organizations such as the National Resident Matching Program, Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, and Association for Hospital Medical Education.

Dr. Goyal has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including multiple years of Top Reviewer awards from the Journal of Graduate Medical Education, Annals of Internal Medicine, and Academic Emergency Medicine Education and Training. He received the Distinguished Section Editor Award by the Western Journal of Emergency Medicine and the Roger F. Smith Outstanding Resident Award by Henry Ford Health System. His current research interests include use of data and technology to advance medical education, health care inequities, and resident/fellow advocacy.
